Surgical Procedures

Surgery for obesity has been performed for just on fifty years. Over this time there have been up to 50 different operations performed with widely differing results and complications. The mostly widely performed operations still being performed will be discussed.

Surgery procedures are divide into three categories:

Restrictive

• Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band
• Vertical Banded Gastroplasty
• Sleeve Gastrectomy

Malabsorptive

• Biliopancreatic diversion +/- Duodenal Switch (BPD=/-DS)
• Jejuno-ileal-bypass (JIB)

Combination

• Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
